Don’t fancy a £1000 fine? Here’s all you need to know about CPC training.

We don’t want to teach anyone to suck eggs but just thought we would highlight what CPC is all about and to keep it in mind to try and plan it early to spread the cost and time.

CPC is the Certificate of Professional Competence, this certification is now a standard part of professional driving so essentially, there’s no getting around it! The CPC standards are set out by the European Union and require all professional drivers to be competent and proficient. To obtain a CPC drivers must complete 35 hours of formal training every 5 years.

To see how many hours of training you have completed in the last 5 years, you can use the government checker here: https://www.gov.uk/check-your-driver-cpc-periodic-training-hours

The training must be completed by anyone who is a professional driver of articulated lorries, tipper trucks, bin lorries, heavy construction equipment, buses or coaches. It is also important to note that you have to conduct your CPC training in the country that you work in.

As a new driver completes their first Category C or Category D training programme, this will include the CPC qualification. If you are a driver that was licenced prior to 2008/2009, you would have been awarded acquired rights which allows 5 years to complete the CPC training. As of September 2014, all commercial drivers were expected to have a valid CPC card. You can be fined up to £1000 for driving professionally without one.

Due to this, the majority of drivers had their CPC cards issued from September 2014 when the law kicked in, which is why it’s important to start thinking about fitting in your 35 hours of training between now and September 2019. We are urging drivers to start thinking about picking up their training ASAP to ensure nobody gets caught short. We urge you to start planning your CPC training as leaving till last minute means businesses ramp up their prices and also if you start to stagger them now the impact on your work and earnings is also spread.
